Creepy Cool and
Off like A Prom Dress
(July 2003)

Creepy Cool

This is another one of those CDs where I find it difficult to describe what I'm hearing. Even So, I will try: The Lost Patrol creates melodious acoustic music with a woman doing the vocals. Everything sounds somehow like western music with slide steel guitars, in any case, very atmospheric. The Lost Patrol was founded in the year 2000 and consists of vocalist Danielle Kimak Stauss and Stephen Masucci and comes from New York. Danielle's singing sometimes reminds me of Bjork or Siouxie Sioux. This CD is very self sustained and odd; if it wasn't for the beautiful voice one could easily use all songs as soundtracks for some strange, quiet films with lots of desert and loneliness. Even the package design fits well to the music, two riders with guitars in playful colors with sun and stars as a background. Put simply: This is music to ride into a sunset with...

Off Like A Prom Dress

This is the new album by The Lost Patrol, that is described as follows on the press packages: "Off Like A Prom Dress" evokes images of smoke-filled lounges, Sergio Leone's spaghetti western film scores, and psychedelic surf parties." A perfect description I would say. As opposed to the preceeding CD "Creepy Cool" these songs are even more introspective since the songs have more melody in the vocals and are partly more quiet and feel more profound than on "Creepy Cool". The slide guitar assures an unmistakable 60's western feeling, that permeates throughout all 13 songs and the entire nearly 48 minute long CD. The vocals are really very beautiful and intense. The band currently consists of three members with an additional musician for live performances. They are a very special and interesting band, they immediately make me feel surrounded by western landscapes, blazing sun or a cool, starry night. Damn it, where is my horse and gun?? OK I'm out swinging my hips...
