Off Like A Prom Dress
On
the cunningly titled Off Like A Prom Dress, The Lost Patrol provide the
perfect soundtrack for a long summer drive when you just want to sit back
and space out. This trio has no proper kit drummer, and instead relies
rather heavily on programming and drum machines, countered by a healthy
dose of live percussion. What really makes them soar are the big, earthy
vocals of Danielle Kimak-Stauss, who breathes playful life into the sweet,
almost understated "Firefly" and the lovely, simple album-closer "I Am
Here." The songs alternate between slow chill-out tunes like "It's All
In My Head" and more upbeat numbers like "Shimmy" that, with it's surf-guitar
twang, is suitable for dancing. The Lost Patrol have certain similarities
to the musical styling of Mazzy Star and The Cowboy Junkies, but while
prolonged exposure to those bands will knock you out like a sleeping pill,
this is an album that's slow and dreamy but never boring, and actually
more and more engrossing upon repeated listening. If the recent Black
Eyed Peas record is perfect for your summer party, then Off Like A Prom
Dress is the perfect summer chillout album for the day after.
